Dear Parents,
I wanted to send a note to all of you introducing myself. My name is Deborah Hilton RN,
A/K/A “Nurse Debi”. I am the school nurse at BCS. My office is always open to the students
and staff. I am at BCS from 7:00am-3:00pm. Should any of you have questions or concerns feel
free to call or e-mail me.
Included in this note you will find helpful information according to the guidelines of the Maine
Department of Health and Human Services, if you’re wondering when to keep your child home
from school.
When should I keep my child home from school?
1) If they have a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or greater. They are to remain
home until they have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing
medications.
2) If they are feeling sick, have diarrhea and/or vomiting or constant nasal discharge. They
should remain home until they have stopped the diarrhea/vomiting, or nasal discharge, for
24 hours.
3) If they have an uncontrolled cough. Keep them home until they are coughing less
frequently.
4) If they have a rash or lesions (sores) that are oozing and cannot be contained with a
bandage. They should be seen by their primary care provider. If they are given an
antibiotic (ointment or pill) they should not return to school until they have been on the
antibiotic for 24 hours. Lesions (sores) should not be oozing and should be covered
before returning to school.
5) If they have Strep throat, Impetigo, or any other bacterial infections that require taking an
antibiotic, they should not return to school until they have been taking the antibiotic for at
least 24 hours.
6) If they have been sick OR injured and seen by a medical provider, they should return
with a letter of clearance from the provider.
Handwashing is the best way to prevent the spread of germs.
We strive to help keep your students healthy which is conducive for a positive learning
experience.
Sincerely,
Deborah Hilton, RN
