Grade 8 Visit to the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine On Friday, January 13th Jefferson Village School 8th graders attended the Jewish Resistance During the Holocaust educational program after reading the novel Night by Elie Weisel. This program took place at the beautiful Michael Klahr Center at the University of Maine in Augusta, which also has exhibits and art work available for the students to view. The presentation included a slide show, information delivered by a HHRC educator, followed by discussion and the opportunity to view artifacts and exhibits in the center. Students were lucky to also view the Reflections on Genocide Exhibit, a collaboration of Casco Bay Hight School and the University of Maine and add their little bit of expression on the wall titled, “Help Design the Future of Brave Communities. The Holocaust and Human Right Center (HHRC) offers programs free of charge to schools across Maine, and is also open to the public.

Grades 5-8 Make Birthday Cards for WWII Code Girl The middle level students made birthday cards to celebrate Leona Chasse, a Navy veteran who is one of the last surviving WWII Code Girls. Leona currently resides at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough and is turning 99 this month. We jumped at the chance to be able to show our appreciation and to make her day a little more cheerful. “Leona was one of 10,000 Navy WAVES secretly recruited as ‘Code Girls’ to serve as Code Breakers working in secrecy to break German and Japanese codes,” according to a friend and fellow Navy veteran. We also used this opportunity to teach the students more about this time in history and the importance of heroes like Leona.
