Spring Dress Code Reminder (from family handbook)

With warm weather officially here, it is a good time to review the NCS dress code.  This following is the section from the Family Handbook for reference.

At NCS, a K-8 dress code has been established in order to maintain student and staff dignity, provide guidance that allows students to participate fully in all school activities and experiences, and provide a safe and affirming school culture.

  • This dress code makes no distinctions regarding gender or gender identity.

  • Staff members will report dress code concerns to the administrator.

  • Dress code concerns will be handled privately and respectfully with a student and administrator or an administrator’s designee.

    • If an article of clothing does not meet the dress code, students may choose to call home for new clothing or wear NCS provided alternatives.

  • The dress code applies to staff as well.

Appropriate student dress is primarily the responsibility of the student and parents.   The following guidelines will help to determine the appropriateness of a student’s apparel choices.  This dress code applies to all students and staff at all school sponsored events.

  • No clothing should be worn to school that:

    • Shares a message that is discriminatory or harassing based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation or any other protected group.

    • Contains suggestive sexual messages or innuendoes

    • Advertises or promotes tobacco, alcohol or any illegal/illicit drugs

    • Depicts weapons or violence, or encourages violence

  • Footwear must be worn at all times.

    • Sneakers are required for PE classes and recommended for recess.

  • Clothing should not reveal midriff, cleavage, or undergarments/pajamas throughout normal daily activity.  Undergarments must be worn under clothes.  Blankets are not permitted

  • The length of clothing (shorts, skirts, dresses, etc.) should not be above the ends of a student’s thumb when standing with arms straight to their sides.

  • Bottoms that have excessive tears above the knees must include a pair of shorts under them to maintain fidelity to the thumb rule.

  • Tops should have a strap width of 2 inches.

  • Students should come to school prepared for the weather conditions and any specific school related activities happening that day

  • Sunglasses, hats and hoods are not to be worn inside the school building.

  • Any item of clothing/accessory that has the potential to be used as a weapon is forbidden.

  • When participating in water activities through school, students shall choose one of the following:

    • One-piece swimsuit

    • Tankini

    • Swim trunks with a swim shirt or rash guard

NCS will provide for families if needed.

Best,

Adam Bullard

With help from Holly Harlow, community volunteer, and Grade 7 students, the first graders spruced up the front entrance garden this week.  A few of our Grade 8 students worked with Holly as well to bring new life to the tulip and hosta garden at the playground entrance.

7th & 8th graders are taking part in a 4-week program at the YMCA, in which they are working out in the fitness center after getting an orientation on how to use the strength and cardio machines and free weight areas, participating in tennis, working on individual skills, and playing cardiotennis games, as well as doing yoga to work on flexibility, mobility, and strength. This is the 2nd year of the exciting partnership with the CLC YMCA and Nobleboro Central School physical education teacher, Michelle York. This opportunity helps support teens in being active, trying new things, and participating in all that our Y community has to offer!
